Evolution Beyond Hearing Aids
While Apple’s AirPods have organically evolved into makeshift hearing aids, they have not been officially marketed as such. However, Gurman’s recent commentary suggests that Apple is inclined to acknowledge and potentially amplify this functionality in forthcoming updates.
Gurman underscores the existing Live Listen feature present in AirPods since the release of iOS 12 in 2018. This functionality enables an iPhone to operate as a directional microphone, streaming real-time audio directly to AirPods. Patent filings from Apple reveal explorations into earbud-based fitness monitoring systems, leveraging advanced biometric sensors to track physiological metrics like temperature, heart rate, and perspiration levels through skin contact and motion sensors.
