Building Energy Saving Retrofit in Liu Lian Primary School A Model of Sustainable Innovation

Introduction

Forward Studio, in collaboration with Jianxue Design and CSCEC, spearheaded the transformation of Pingdi Liulian Primary School into a pioneering example of energy efficiency and carbon reduction. Situated in the Longgang District’s “Five Ones” Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction Model Program, the project marks Shenzhen’s first venture into near-zero-energy elementary school campuses.

Campus Revitalization

The renovation aimed to create a safe, comfortable, and eco-friendly learning environment by addressing safety concerns, optimizing space utilization, and integrating zero-carbon principles. By revitalizing entrances, corridors, and open spaces, the campus now fosters a conducive atmosphere for interdisciplinary learning activities.

Low-Carbon Teaching Approach

The project emphasizes a holistic approach to sustainability, encompassing green construction materials, energy-efficient technologies, and intelligent teaching methodologies. Through the integration of modular construction methods and steel structures, the renovation minimized energy consumption and disruption to teaching activities.

Innovative Features

The campus features innovative elements such as the “Green Box” platform and Carbon Sequestration Garden, which serve as educational tools for students to engage with renewable energy and environmental conservation. Additionally, the “Energy Cube” acts as an intelligent energy control center, optimizing electricity consumption and balancing power generation.

Energy-Efficient Solutions

To achieve near-zero energy consumption, the project incorporated high-efficiency insulation, double-layer Low-E glass, and intelligent HVAC systems. The implementation of AI-driven energy monitoring systems allows real-time tracking of energy consumption, empowering the school to optimize its environmental performance.

Achieving Sustainability Goals

Following the completion of the retrofit, Liu Lian Primary School is projected to save 28,000 kWh of electricity annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by 13 tons, equivalent to planting 3,250 trees. By harnessing solar energy and increasing renewable energy utilization, the campus achieves self-sufficiency in electricity consumption, setting a benchmark for sustainable educational facilities.

Conclusion

The Building Energy Saving Retrofit in Liu Lian Primary School exemplifies the fusion of sustainable design, innovative technology, and educational excellence. By embracing zero-carbon principles and intelligent solutions, the project not only reduces environmental impact but also inspires future generations to prioritize sustainability in their educational journey.
