Exploring Literary Spaces Juanzong Books and Eureka! Touring Library at Aranya

Introduction

Nestled within the Anaya Art Center in Qinhuangdao, China, the Juanzong Books and Eureka! Touring Library stands as a cultural oasis for bibliophiles and enthusiasts alike. Designed by genarchitects, this innovative space redefines the traditional bookstore experience, offering a serene environment for exploration and discovery.

Bookstore Design

Originally a coffee shop comprising two interconnected spaces, the Juanzong Books bookstore underwent a transformation to embody the essence of architectural literature. With a limited construction period of just one month, the architects focused on enhancing the ambiance through subtle changes, such as replacing the suspended ceiling and furniture. The design aimed to cultivate a workspace atmosphere, characterized by simplicity and functionality, with carefully curated lighting and furnishings to complement the architectural theme.

Spatial Utilization

Distinct areas within the bookstore serve different purposes, with the high-ceilinged space retaining its cafe function and serving as an exhibition area for images and posters. In contrast, the lower space is cocooned by bookshelves, creating a cozy and intimate setting conducive to browsing and reading. The central drawing table takes center stage, bathed in soft light, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the world of books.

Book Fair Rooms

Adjacent to the bookstore are the book fair rooms, each uniquely shaped and connected by a spiral ramp. To maintain a cohesive ambiance throughout the fair, the architects adorned the ramp with posters, while gauze curtains were added to the windows to filter natural light and provide a serene backdrop for the exhibition. The furniture, including lamps and exhibition tables, was meticulously designed to reflect the architectural theme, combining simplicity with structural stability.

Innovative Furniture Design

The design of the furniture, particularly the exhibition tables and pendant lamps, was driven by a blend of functionality and aesthetics. The tables, featuring self-supporting legs positioned at the quartile position, were designed for easy transportation and assembly. Similarly, the pendant lamps, crafted from galvanized steel plates, incorporate elements of origami, evoking a sense of nostalgia and craftsmanship.

Conclusion

The Juanzong Books and Eureka! Touring Library at Aranya embodies a harmonious fusion of architecture and literature, providing a sanctuary for book enthusiasts to explore, learn, and connect. Through thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail, genarchitects have created a cultural landmark that celebrates the beauty and significance of books in the digital age.
