Preserving Heritage The French Institute of Andean Studies
Introduction
The French Institute of Andean Studies (IFEA), located in Lima’s historic Barranco district, has undergone a significant transformation, spearheaded by Roman Bauer Arquitectos and ESARQUITECTURA Atelier. The project involves two distinct buildings: a renovated heritage house serving as administrative offices and amenities, and a new structure housing the library and research facilities.
Integration of Spaces
A central patio garden, adorned with a preserved palm tree, serves as the focal point, connecting the various functions of the institute. This space facilitates access to the bookstore, cafeteria, and library, fostering a sense of community within the institution.
Design Features
The library, situated on the first floor of the new building, boasts a double-height reading room flooded with natural light. Flexible sliding panels allow for seamless transformation into an academic events space. The library houses a vast collection of over 80,000 volumes, cleverly stored in compact shelves within a protective concrete casing.
Innovative Construction Techniques
The upper floor features scientific research rooms crafted using traditional quincha construction methods. These rooms, naturally lit and ventilated, blend seamlessly with the heritage house, preserving its historical integrity. Improved quincha techniques, utilizing caña brava and mud, ensure thermal insulation and structural stability.
Environmental Sustainability
The project prioritizes environmental sustainability, utilizing materials such as caña, mud, stone, and wood with minimal environmental impact. Passive climatization mechanisms leverage solar orientation and prevailing winds to enhance comfort while reducing energy consumption.

The project’s innovative approach and commitment to heritage preservation have garnered accolades, including the National Hexagon Steel Award at the XIX Biennial of Peruvian Architecture 2022.
