Rediscovering the Landscape Transforming the Workshop Tower
Introduction
In 2021, the former climbing tower at the “Wienerbruck” base camp in Lower Austria’s largest nature park, “Ötscher Tormäuer,” underwent a transformative renovation. Johanna Digruber and Christian Fröhlich of HARDDECOR ARCHITEKTUR in Vienna reimagined the tower wasteland as a “flying classroom,” reshaping its purpose to facilitate a deeper connection with nature.
Repurposing the Tower
The once-obsolete tower now houses a workshop and a natural artifact archive, featuring a ten-meter-high room with direct access to an orchard via a terrace. An extension to the stair tower allows visitors to reach a sheltered interior and a viewing terrace offering panoramic vistas of the iconic “Ötscher” mountain.
Inspiration from Garden Structures
The design of the adapted tower draws inspiration from garden structures of the 19th century, particularly the concept of “folies” or architectural exclamation marks. These structures, positioned between art and architecture, serve as aesthetic additions to the landscape, fostering a harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
A New Educational Space
The revitalized tower serves as a “flying classroom,” providing innovative opportunities for nature education in an outdoor workshop surrounded by an orchard boasting old varieties of fruit. This educational space caters to learners of all ages, inviting visitors to engage with mediation programs focused on fostering a deeper understanding of the natural environment.
The Philosophy Behind the Project
The concept of “Form, Follies, Function” coined by Hans Hollein underscores the project’s ethos, emphasizing the playful integration of architectural follies within the landscape. Digruber and Fröhlich’s approach to architecture as both art and research reflects their commitment to creating immersive and transformative spaces that blur the boundaries between the artificial and the natural.
Conclusion
The transformation of the workshop tower exemplifies a shift towards experiential learning and environmental stewardship. By repurposing a neglected structure into a vibrant educational hub, HARDDECOR ARCHITEKTUR has not only revitalized the physical space but also reimagined the relationship between architecture, nature, and education.
